Privacy Policy — SOS Beacon

This Privacy Policy explains how SOS Beacon ("the app", "we", "us") handles your information. SOS Beacon is an offline-first emergency alert app for Android (package com.sosbeacon.sos_beacon). We are committed to protecting your privacy: the app has no account system, no developer-run servers, and no cloud storage. Your personal data stays on your device.

1. Information stored on your device

The app stores the following locally on your device only (in a private SQLite database and app preferences). It is never uploaded to us:

Emergency contacts — the names and phone numbers you add or import.
Message templates — the emergency message text you create.
Settings — your name (used inside the alert message), theme, and toggles.
Purchase status — a flag indicating whether you have unlocked Premium.

Uninstalling the app deletes this data. We cannot recover it because we never receive it.

2. Location

When you send an SOS alert (and location sharing is enabled), the app reads your device’s GPS location to include a Google Maps link in the emergency SMS so your contacts can find you. Your location is used only at the moment you send an alert. It is not tracked in the background, not stored, and not sent to us — it is placed only into the SMS you send to your own chosen contacts.

3. SMS messages

The app sends SMS text messages only when you tap the SOS button, and only to the emergency contacts you have configured. Messages are sent directly through your device’s cellular/SMS service. Standard carrier messaging rates may apply. We do not read, collect, or transmit your SMS messages to any server.

4. Contacts

With your permission, the app can import a contact’s name and phone number from your phone’s address book so you can add it as an emergency contact. This happens only when you choose to import, and the data is stored locally on your device. We do not upload your address book.

5. Advertising (free version)

The free version of the app displays ads through Google AdMob. To serve ads, Google may collect and process certain data (such as your device advertising identifier, approximate/IP-based location, and app interactions) in accordance with Google’s policies. This data is handled by Google, not by us. Learn more:

Purchasing Premium removes all ads, after which no ad data is collected by the app.

6. Purchases

Premium is a one-time in-app purchase processed by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your payment details; they are handled entirely by Google. The app only stores a local flag indicating that Premium is active.

7. Permissions we request and why

SEND_SMS — to send emergency alerts to your contacts.
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION — to attach your location to an alert.
READ_CONTACTS — to let you import an emergency contact.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — reserved for quick-action features.
Internet/network access — used only by Google AdMob to load ads (free version) and by Google Play Billing.

8. Data sharing

We do not sell your personal data. The only third parties involved are Google AdMob (ads, free version) and Google Play Billing (purchases), as described above. The emergency SMS you send goes only to the recipients you configure.

9. Children

SOS Beacon is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Data security

Because your data stays on your device, its security depends on your device’s own protections (screen lock, encryption). We recommend keeping your device secured.

11. Your choices

You can delete any contact, template, or all app data at any time from within the app or by uninstalling it.
You can revoke SMS, location, or contacts permissions in Android Settings at any time (some features will then stop working).
You can reset your advertising identifier in Android Settings → Privacy.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date.
